Research- Task 4- what is the purpose and common features of a title sequence?

The main purpose of a title sequence orignally was to inform the audience about which company owns the film and which company was involved in making it.
Nowadays the main purpose of a title sequence is to entice the audience in to watching the film and from that they will be able to set the tone/atmosphere, the genre of the film and who the characters are.

To make a good title sequence there are some common features which companies follow in order to make the sequence appeal to the audience.
One common feature which the film often begins with is Idents this includes crediting the production and distrubition company. Also the title of the film is introduced in the beginning.
Another common feature is background music, which is often Non-Diegetic, this helps in adding suspense and gives clues to the genre. Other features include giving an insight to the setting, location and the characters. Title credits are then shown throughout the sequence.

An example of a film opening that I thought was good is Skyfall, as it displayed the typical conventions of a title sequence. e.g the music in the background which helped in promoting the singer (Adele) as well as adding suspense to the scenes being played in the title sequence, which correlates to the theme of crime. You also see the main character (James Bond) falling from the sky into the ocean which correlates with the title of the film which is Skyfall.
